16 students receive 18th NI Jamir Academic Excellence Award

Kohima, May 25: Altogether 16 students belonging to the Ao community today received the 18th NI Jamir Academic Excellence Award for securing Top-20 positions in the recently declared HSLC examination results under Nagaland Board of School Education.

The award recipients are: Moamenla B. Kichu (Aliba) & Benjungakum Jamir (Merangkong) – 9th; Chendila Walling (Khar) & Suyaben Longkumer (Ungma) – 10th; Tajungren Imsong (Longjang) & Moaakum T. Longkumer (Dibuia) – 12th;

Aiensen Aier (Mopungchuket) – 13th; Imlibong Jamir (Sungratsu), Nukshirenla Kichu (Khensa), Tiarenla Longkumer (Merangkong) & Tiainla (Dibuia) – 14th; Imkongsungit Jamir (Merangkong) Liropong Ao (Khar) & Imkongsenla Longkumer (Changtongya) – 17th; Imjunglila Jamir (Khar) – 19th and Temsujungba (Khar) – 20th.

They received bouquet, citation and cash Rs 10,000 each which has handed over by Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A. Pangjung Jamir during a glittering ceremony held at Capital Convention Centre here under the aegis of Kohima Ongpangkong Telongjem (KOT).

Addressing the gathering, Advisor Jamir while maintaining that achieving excellence is never easy, said excellence is the quality of excelling, of being truly the best at something and is truly an investment that gives us a return even long after the efforts have been made.

Academic excellence stands as a cornerstone in a child’s journey towards a prosperous future, he said, adding that it is not only an ability to score high marks, but it also includes the ability to cope with the changing world and be well equipped for the future and includes the ability to display the superior performance in all scholastic and moral activities including good behavior and Fear of the Lord.

In this fast growing era where Science & Technology is in high pace, he encouraged the youngsters to preserve the culture and tradition.

There are many indigenous people and tribes across the world from the Arctic to the Pacific but we Ao’s are very privileged as we have very distinctive cultural and traditional practices thus a cultured person is always looked up and respected, he said.

One’s hereditary derivations and origins should be always saved and preserved, he said, adding that traditional dresses and materials symbolizes one’s own identity should be conserved by all the younger people.

Ao’s also have a very distinctive way to address each other but the youths of today make it easier with words from English or Nagamese, he remarked.

He therefore urged all the younger generations to address both the elder and the younger people in the society with the proper words in Ao language which will maintain a stronger bond among all.

Meanwhile, Advisor Jamir lauded the meritorious students for the commendable academic success they have achieved and for the meritorious laurels they have brought to the community.

He described Late N.I. Jamir as a legendary and notable person who had served in the Government in the top most position as Chief Secretary and also joined politics and served as a Cabinet Minister in the state.

While serving the state government as a bureaucrat, he spent most of his days posted in the ENPO and Sumi areas, he said. Late Jamir was a leader who was not only known to the Ao’s but treated all the tribes equally, he said.

Advisor Jamir hoped that this award ceremony would truly motivate the students to keep excelling in academics and sway the flag of “Education & Knowledge” higher and louder.

Kohima Ao Telongjem president T. Chubayanger also exhorted the youngsters while KOT president Alemkümzük delivered the welcome address and Convenor NIJT Board of Governors Nochasashi shared the details of the award.

The programme commenced with prayer by Associate Pastor Christian Education KABA Alice Walling while KABA PAstor O. Sashi Ozükum offered special prayer for the successful candidates and NIJT Board of Governors Secretary Temsdu Soyay tendered the vote thanks and Putulemla Kichu enthralled the gathering with a special number.
