People heading out to Derbyshire attractions on Sunday should be prepared for a series of sunshine and showers but also the possibility of some heavy rain and thunderstorms, according to the Met Office. It has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms between noon and 8pm on Sunday, May 26 across the whole of the East Midlands, including Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire Lincolnshire and Leicestershire.

The Met Office said that slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms "may cause flooding and disruption in places" as they develop during the course of the afternoon, according to the weather warning which was issued earlier on Saturday. Rainfall amounts will vary significantly across the warning area but in some places there is the possibility of 20-30mm of rain falling in an hour or less.

There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services and difficult driving conditions.

According to the latest hour by hour forecast, heavy rain will fall in Derby and Derbyshire early on Sunday morning between 5am and 9am before turning lighter for a short time. But by 12 noon there is a danger of thunderstorms through until 3pm when it will give way to the possibility of a showery afternoon and evening, eventually drying up about 9pm. Temperatures will range from around 12C to 17C.

Bank holiday Monday is currently looking cloudy all day with temperatures barely getting about 15C and Tuesday will see some rain again. But some sunshine and warmer temperatures are forecast on Wednesday through to at least next Friday.
