Jeremiah Azu has become the first Welsh 100m runner to break the 10-second barrier in wind-legal conditions.

Azu ran 9.97 to win at the True Athletes Classics in Leverkusen on Saturday. The 23-year-old from Cardiff is the first European to run under 10 seconds this year.

The 2022 British 100m champion, who also added the domestic 60m gold to his growing collection earlier this year, won by a clear margin - finishing ahead of German pair Owen Ansah (10.11) and Robin Ganter (10.13).

He is now equal eighth on the British all-time list, alongside Dwain Chambers and Adam Gemili, becoming just the 12th British man to run under 10 seconds.

Azu was already the fastest Welshman ever after he broke Christian Malcolm's record for the 100m in July last year with a time of 10.04 seconds.

In 2022, Azu beat then European 100m champion Zharnel Hughes in the UK Athletics Championships with a wind-assisted time of 9.90 - becoming the first Welsh 100m UK champion since Ron Jones won in 1969.

Earlier this year, he outlined his goals for 2024, saying he wanted to run a sub-10 time and reach the Paris Olympics later this year - with Azu having now ticked off one of those targets.

“Of course, for outdoors my target is to run sub-10,” said Azu in February. “I ran 10.04 last year but I really want to get in that exclusive club of sub-10 this year and I think I can.

“My main goal is to make the British team then make the final in Paris.”
